Awake Brain Surgery

Awake brain surgery, also known as awake craniotomy, is a surgical procedure performed on the brain while the patient is awake and aware. This type of surgery is often used in cases where the affected area of the brain is responsible for critical functions such as speech, motor skills, or sensory perception. The primary goal of awake brain surgery is to minimize damage to functional areas of the brain while removing or treating a lesion, tumor, or other abnormalities.

Awake brain surgery offers several advantages, including:

  • Real-time Feedback: The ability to interact with the patient during surgery allows the surgical team to receive immediate feedback on the impact of their actions on brain function.
  • Precision: The surgeon can precisely target and remove the abnormal tissue while minimizing damage to healthy, functional areas.
  • Reduced Risk: By avoiding damage to critical brain regions, the risk of postoperative neurological deficits is minimized.
