Spinal Infection
Spinal infection, also known as vertebral osteomyelitis or spinal epidural abscess, is a serious medical condition involving the infection of the spine. This condition can affect different structures within the spine, including the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, and the surrounding tissues.
Causes of Spinal Infection:
- Bloodstream (Hematogenous Spread): Bacteria from an infection elsewhere in the body can travel through the bloodstream and settle in the spine.
- Contiguous Spread: Infections from nearby structures, such as the kidneys or soft tissues, can spread directly to the spine.
- Post-Surgical or Invasive Procedures: Spinal infections can also occur as a complication of spine surgery or other invasive procedures.
Symptoms of Spinal Infection:
- Back Pain: Persistent, localized pain in the affected area.
- Fever: Systemic symptoms such as fever may be present.
- Neurological Symptoms: Depending on the location and severity of the infection, patients may experience neurological symptoms such as weakness, numbness, or tingling in the limbs.
- Limited Range of Motion: Pain and stiffness may limit the ability to move the spine.
- Localized Tenderness: The infected area may be tender to the touch.
