Spinal Trauma

Spinal trauma refers to injuries affecting the spine, which is the column of bones (vertebrae) that surrounds and protects the spinal cord. Traumatic spinal injuries can result from various accidents, falls, or violent impacts, and they can have serious implications for neurological function and overall well-being.

Causes of Spinal Trauma:

  • Traumatic Injuries: These are often the result of accidents, falls, sports injuries, or vehicular accidents. The force applied to the spine can cause fractures, dislocations, or compression of the spinal cord.
  • Non-Traumatic Causes: Spinal trauma can also be caused by non-traumatic factors such as tumors, infections, inflammatory diseases, or degenerative conditions that affect the spine.

Symptoms of Spinal Trauma:

  • Pain: Localized pain at the site of injury.
  • Paralysis: Loss of motor function in parts of the body below the injury.
  • Sensory Changes: Altered or loss of sensation below the injury level.
  • Difficulty Breathing: Injuries to the upper spinal cord may affect respiratory muscles.
  • Loss of Bowel or Bladder Control: Disruption of autonomic functions controlling these processes.
